Quotes from Origins

Still processing much of what I absorbed at Origins, but I thought I’d share a few “quotes” in the mean time. I call them quotes (and many of them are), but in reality some of them are paraphrases.

If your Church is too organized… “The most organized community in the world is a cemetery.” “All of us want Pentecost, but we are afraid of Mars Hill.” “We live between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Jesus has already acted on our behalf, but it won’t make sense until tomorrow.” “Fellowship, in most churches, is like walking in on two people making out…It’s intimate, but you feel like you shouldn’t be there.” “We program what we don’t have.” “The models we are looking for to solve our problems are the problem. The answer is Faith, Hope, and Love.” “I was leading just enough to keep us growing but I needed to be leading to risk everything.” “You’re a factory defect.” [In reference to people who have been Christians for 20 years who still need "discipleship". "No matter how much we invest in people, if we teach them to be consumers they will not suddenly become investors." "We like the language of making history but are uncomfortable with creating the future." "Creativity is heart fueled and head driven." "You can not create an ethos you are not." We should "not preach the Bible, we should share our lives through the scriptures." "You do not have to be all that you want/need to be, but you need to be struggling to become it." "If you don't get a person on the mission of Christ right away, chances are you never will." Regarding membership - "Nothing to join except the mission." "How soon is too soon to send people out? It can never be too soon, but it can be too late." "It doesn't really matter if you are a bit confused because God is on the move... and so am I." "Sometimes what the spirit is doing and what we're doing are not the same thing." "Sometimes God takes us the long way around." [In reference to the Exodus and in reference to our lives] “The objective of the huddle is not to stay in the huddle, but to break the huddle, go to the line of scrimmage, and make the play.” “Not emergent… Ancient in a new way.”

Not all these quotes were by Erwin, but wonderful note taker that I am, I did not make reference to who was speaking when I wrote it down.
