Well, I finally got mine. After many months of looking at, thinking about, and drooling over this extreme coffee mug, I finally got one as a belated Father’s Day gift (I was in Mexico on Father’s Day). Ben got one a while back, but his was red, which was one of the many things I didn’t like about the original one we saw at Starbucks.
Next week I am going to put this thing to the test. It claims to be extreme, but can it take two weeks of camp. My only complaint (with all coffee mugs) is that it is too small. I generally order a Venti (or equivalent) and it only holds 16 oz. Maybe they should make a camel back extreme. Capable of handling hot coffee and keeping it hot for several days.

I couldn’t find a picture of the one they have at Target so I found a picture of a Starbuck’s one. Mine is the same as yours and in the picture. Glad to hear you got one I think you really like it, I do!
I have been googling about trying to find a new top for my contigo mug, which I lost. For the life of me I can’t find the company or how to order a new one - do you have any ideas? I LOVE this mug!
My only thought would be call Target. Since this mug was once offered at Starbucks (as a Starbucks mug) it probably isn’t made by Starbucks or Contigo. If anybody could track down who made it and spare parts, it would be Target.
http://www.gocontigo.com is the official website. http://www.igniteusa.com is who really makes ‘em.
Thanks for the info.
You can also get these (I just ordered 3) for $20 from cariboucoffee.com
you canfind them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond both in retail and online. Just Google “contigo travel mug” ….

Costco now sells a 2-pack for around $19. Half the price of target or BB&B.
I can’t understand why the two pack at COSTCO has one with a handle and one without… it doesn’t make sense. Can you tell me why?
Reference the two pack at Costco, some cup holders won’t hold the mug with the handle (I know, ’cause I have one of those cup holders) so the mug without the handle does have some point.
Well, had 2 of these from Starbucks - absolutely loved them - kept coffee HOT for 4-5 hours, iced tea I brought in to work in the morning STILL had ice in it at 5:30 in the evening (and this is in Houston in the summer!) - well the lid started leaking on one, so found these at BB&B - TOTALLY dissapointed - won’t keep coffee barely warm for couple of hours! What did the product Starbucks ordered have that these don’t?
Don’t know about the BB&B ones, but the Target ones ROCK! Might want to check them out. Saw some at Sam’s that looked similar, but were junk. Target’s are identical to the Starbucks variety except not red and not $30.
Well, here’s someone that agrees with my feelings about this mug - gimme me my Starbucks mug back!!!!
Quote: It’s a nice cup but,,,, December 17, 2006 Reviewer: Happy traveler (NC ,USA) - See all my reviews It’s a nice looking cup, handle is superb and the lid seals tightly. It will not keep coffee hot no longer than any other insulated cup. You can fill the heat of the liquid through the outside just like any other coffee mug. Unless you need a very sturdy cup that can stand abuse, I would buy a cheaper cup that serves the same purpose
I’m on my 3rd one …1st one was stolen out of a hotel room, 2nd got run through the dishwater and dropped. Ruined the fantastic insulating feature. It used to still have ice in it after 10 hours in my truck cab in Texas City, Tx. Hours of 100 plus temperature.
Steve, does the one you have now perform like your first one? My first one (from Starbucks) you could put scalding hot coffee in it and the outside of the mug was COOL!! The new one I bought from BB&B gets warm on the outside, and when I have iced beverage in it it sweats like a hog!!
I bought one at BB&B and just returned it. Outside of cup gets hot and coffee inside gets cold. Went to Target and bought another. Using scalding water did side to side comparison with my genuine Starbucks mug. Outside of Target mug got real warm and Starbucks version stayed cool. What’s the deal? Is Contigo really the company that made the Starbucks version or did they copy the design? How could such a great mug (I have two from Starbucks, lost my third)become so inferior?
Wanted to update my previous post. I emailed the company and they make two versions. The ones sold at Target and BB&B are different than the Starbucks version. Costco and Starbucks are vacuum insulated, Target and BB&B are foam. The retailers get to decide what they want to buy and sell. Perhaps Target sold the vacuum ones originally and Chris was lucky to get one. If those of you looking can find the vacuum insulated ones, they are great and worth every penny!!
Cathy, thanx a bunch! I was going to write them and find out what was going on - I KNEW the ones I got weren’t as good as the ones I got from Starbucks! Costco, here I come!!
Thanks all for your input and research. I have been meaning to try the hot water test on my Contigo Branded (from Target) mug and have not yet. Never noticed ANY warmth when full so as Cathy suggests, perhaps I got lucky. Also, my friend Ben got one from Target and I don’t think he has any problems with his, either.
I am getting ready to buy another one, though, so we need to find out what is going on. I wonder what the minimum quantity would be to get custom ChrisMarsden.com branded mugs done and then you all can just order one here (guarenteed to not suck).
Silly amateurs! Who drinks the same cup of coffee all day??
My fav. mug is by Nissan. Pretty random, Eh?
My Starbucks mug if you feel the bottom you will feel a nipple - the bottom comes off with a little pulling, and there is an obvious nipple where the mug was evacuated and sealed. The one from BB&B, I can’t pull the bottom off, and can’t feel a nipple under the rubber bottom - Cris, what about your Target mug??
Oh yeah, you have to press pretty hard to feel the nipple through the rubber bottom. (I can say nipple here, right?)
I can’t find the mug in costco..
Yes…I have a nipple. And yes you can say nipple…BUT…
My email is acting up so I didn’t get notification of this comment and I was cruising my comments for SPAM and all I read was “you have to press hard to feel the nipple”. In context, it is a good point. Out of context, I was frightened.
I think that might be a good shopping tip for people when they are looking at these mugs. And I didn’t have to press REALLY hard, it was just slightly under the surface and pretty obvious.
I couldn’t find them at my local Super Target (Houston) either. Who else might carry these?
So, Chris, you lucked out and got a vacuum one at Target, huh??
Steve - where’d you buy yours in Tx City??
Here’s a link I found and the picture of the packaging states Vacuum on it. $25 for two, but the want $8+ for ground shipping!!
http://store2home.com/productinfo.php?productsid=831&osCsid=11dd8e28eb96c4ae0df266a1287b2826
Ordered a set from the above post - picture says VACUUM, also asked store if BOTH had handles and they assured me they did (guess I can always send them back if they’er liars!)
Will let you know what I get.
Reading all this justs hurts! I’m from British Columbia, Canada. No, that’s not the part that hurts!! I lost my Starbucks extreme mug last summer and have been trying to find a replacement. I have gone as far as calling/emailing/harassing Starbucks head office to find out if they have any more hanging around or to bring it back. I’ve been on the net, finally found Contigo brand and not one of the stores that carry it –Target, BBB, Costco US ships to Canada (we have Costco here but what good are they if they dont carry this mug!!). We are right next door! Ebay prices start at USD49.99 - a rip-off. Anybody have any ideas for me?
Check the site in my post 28 above - I am still waiting for it to be shipped - sent email today asking what is going on, no response yet. When I DO get them I’ll let you know what I get.
I looked at that site yesterday and tried to open an account on line but wont allow CDN address, seems another place that wont ship to Canada. Site doesnt include a phone # just email address, do you have a number handy? Thanks Mike, much appreciated.
Are, the ones from cariboucoffee.com vacumm or foam? Could somone please let me know.
I emailed the CaribouCoffee people about this. I also got a call back from Store2Home - they held my order because I had selected blue ones, and all they had was silver and red. I said if the red ones said vacuum, send them. He said they did and sent them - I’ll let you know what I get.
Got the ones from Shop2Home - both are the vacuum movels, and my wife loves them (again!) However, one has a handle and the other one does not, contrary to what the customer support person stated. (he said both had handles.)
Still not a bad deal considering what the originals cost. Thanks for doing the research and making the gamble.
Hello,
I keep trying to find the shop2home coffee mug, but the link on 28 isnt working. Can someone repost it, or tell me what to search under. I would like to purchase a new one as well. Thanks.
Well, I can’t find them there anymore either! Guess I lucked out and got the last two! A friend of mine did find a vacuum one mixed in with the insulated ones at Target. You just have to test using #23, 25 and 25 above.
I tried Ebay, searched “Starbucks carabiner” and found Susan Schiller from Coffee Mug Outlet and she sells both original Starbucks and Caribou travel mugs for $19.99. I bought 2,she is in Chicago. There are used mugs going for $50 in there, crazy.

Gina - I agree - seems the Starbucks version is a collectors item! I hope you get the vacuum and not the really bad insulated ones - look above on how to tell which you have.
Michelle - check the link in #39 - it seems to be genuine Starbucks mugs (by the picture, anyway!)
Mike, I sure hope so, its says double wall stainless steel plus the seller Susan works for Ignite USA - see #4 -they are the manufacturer. Will let you know, I ordered the blue ones.
Thanks Mike and Gina…..I did check the ebay link, and I emailed Susan. She did tell me that the Starbucks ones are vacuum sealed. I’m getting some now…thanks again!
Cool! Wished I had seen that before I ordered mine!
I had my Starbucks mug for over a year and just lost it last week. It’s been 6 days–I can not live without it and searched on-line for a replacement. The Starbucks mugs are bidding for at least $40.
I just ordered some from here: http://store3-store.stores.yahoo.net/sthot2paheco.html and am really afraid they are not vacuum sealed.
Wish I had seen this post before I ordered them. If they aren’t vacuum sealed, I’ll just return them and head to Costco.
Thanks for the post and wish me luck!
A QUICK UPDATE:
I ordered one from the link in 39 and it should be shipping today. I also made contact with the folks at Ignite, and while I can’t get any to sell here directly, they have introduced me to some new mugs that are going to be on the market soon which look like they are going to be awesome.
I will let you know how the order from ebay goes when it completes and I will have more info soon on their new products.
I received my Starbucks Extreme Travel mugs today! Its vacuum sealed and I’m enjoying a Venti Americano at this very moment - I’m so happy I may just leave work early and show it off! I just checked Ebay store Coffee Mug Outlet and Susan still have some available. I highly recommend! Also, new Ignite Duo Desk Mugs are there as well for $9.99 for 4!
i got one from target. It works well. Air tight……. it keeps coffee and tea hot enough for long enough……… exactly, who drinks one cup throughout the whole day.
besides. i don;t want to burn my mouth
I just wanted to let you know that I also ordered from the link on 39 (from Susan), and they are just as I hoped…vacuum sealed and in great condition! Thanks for all the help!
Just a note to let you know that Costco in Canada is now carrying the vacuumed sealed mugs, the two pack (one with handle & one without) for just under $30 Cdn. After a year of searching I’m enjoying my coffee in my new mug this morning! Guess what all my family and friends are getting for Christmas!
Thank you all for your comments regarding this mug. I was about to purchase it from amazon.com at the moment I crossed with this website. I believe you saved me from making a bad purchase.
It’s obvious to me now that neither Amazon’s (which sells from Target) nor BB&B are recommended due to the fact that they aren’t (or probably aren’t) vacuum sealed.
Although some of you have reported that Target’s mugs ARE vacuum sealed, Target does not carry the mug in their stores so it isn’t possible to see before buying. Purchasing from target.com (@ $19.95 + Sh) to then find out that the mug is foam insulated is a chance that I don’t want to take.
So that leaves me with three possible options: buying from Caribou, from Costco or from the ebay store you mentioned.
At cariboucoffee.com they don’t seem to be carrying the mug any longer.
At costco.com I couldn’t find the mug either. I am not a Costco member but I was willing to pay the 5% surcharge for non-members’ purchases made online. At the stores they have no option for “upcharging” non-members. If you want to buy anything you have to sign up for $45 membership (which at this point I can’t do). So, if any of you have the item # for the set of mugs I’d appreciate if you could post it. It would be a whole lot easier to search their website with a product number.
The ebay store sells the mug but not the 2 pack set which is better on a cost per benefit basis. So, if possible, I would like to stick with the 2 piece set, which, as far as I know, is only being sold at Costco.
Chris: you also mentioned that you had some “inside scoop” on contigo/ignite future set of products. Can you elaborate?
Fede - Go to ebay store Coffee Mug Outlet again, seller Susan Schiller works for manufacturer Ignite USA - products are now on sale - Starbucks Vaccuum Sealed mugs are now $17.99 each. Good luck.
Does anyone have a picture of the Costco two pack? I don’t have a card so I have to have someone else buy it for me and it’d be nice to make sure they got the right thing.
Thanks.
P.S. It’s really good to know I’m not the only one obsessed with these mugs. I have a Starbucks one and nothing works as well, not even the OXO Good Grips one I was given for my birthday.
Greg: a picture of the two piece set is at this link (note that this ISN’T Susan’s store)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230112024407&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11
My friend checked Costco yesterday, they didn’t have the mug set. Supposedly they stopped carrying them in December.
Thanks for the help, though.
Gee whiz! I wish I ran across this site before I bought two Caribou Extreme Tumblers off Ebay last week. I’m so disappointed. My daily coffee regime is now hampered by pouring my coffee out of my Caribou mug into a Styrofoam cup (at the office) to warm in the microwave and then back goes the coffee into the Extreme Caribou Mug. I think when they sold the non-insulated version it must have been someone’s idea of a bad joke. It’s ridiculous to spend that much engineering and development into a really fine design only to have it fail on the keeping things warm arena. Styrofoam cups keep coffee warmer! I used my Starbucks Extreme Tumbler for three plus years until recently when I set the thing on the side of my truck and drove off and left it.
I’m very skeptical about buying another set of these mugs (one for me and one for my wife) from anywhere without knowing for certain the thing is vacuum insulated. I’m curious if any of you have a new working link with the vacuum sealed kind available. I’ve checked the Costco and other links above and they no longer work. I’ve emailed the ebay link (Susan’s store) and asked them to verify the vacuum sealed version on their $17.99 mug. They also have the Caribou mugs which makes me think twice before buying from them. I’d hate to make the same mistake twice.
I emailed Susan asking the same on her $12.95 mug (35% off). She assured me their were vaccum insulated. Ended up buying last Tuesday. I’ll update on how that goes.
Sean - I bought 4 of Starbucks Extreme mugs from Susan’s store (2 Blue and 2 White) and they are all Vaccuum insulated just like original I lost. She just added Silver ones for $19.99 each - no longer on sale.
I am so glad to have found this site during my hunt for the Starbucks Extreme Tumbler! I was so worried I would not be able to find one. However, I was looking at the Ebay link above, and it seems like the tumbler she is selling has a different colored top than the original. Here is a picture of the original:
http://www.fashionwindows.com/visualprofiles/2003/starbucks.asp
Do the tops still work the same as the old ones?
Very, very glad I ran across this web site! And I thought I was the only one with this particular disea–I mean fanatici–uuuhhhhmmmm, “enthusiasm!” :}
My wife will take comfort in knowing that other spouses are “suffering,” too!
Okay, so I’m probably going to order one of these mugs… but here’s a “scientific” question that one of you can hopefully answer.
What’s so bad/wrong about running a stainless steel mug through the dishwasher, especially one of these “extreme” mugs? A few months back, I bought a $9.99 miGo mug at Target, black plastic, dishwasher safe. While shopping, I noticed that a lot of pricier stainless steel mugs said “Hand wash only” on the little instruction sheet inside.
So is there something related to the chemistry/physics of a stainless steel mug that makes it great for all these “extreme” conditions… but unfit for the everyday dishwasher that works great on “less-extreme” items like plates, bowls, and baby bottles?
Thanks!
–Randall
Caroline - tops for the ones from Susan’s Ebay store Coffee Mug Outlet is the same. Picture on the link you provided is just a different color mug - Starbucks had red, lime, blue, orange, white, etc. and this sport version in yellow and silver blue in your picture. Remember Susan works for IgniteUSA - the makers of these mugs. She is just selling overstock from their clients (Starbucks, Cariboo, Contigo etc..)Its the real Starbucks Extreme Carabiner mug.
Randall - Cant put them in the dishwasher because mug have a plastic coating on them indicating the color of the mug and it melts off in the dry heat setting. As well, Starbucks ones are all Vacuum Insulated (that’s why they were more expensive in the stores plus of course you are paying for Starbucks name), I cannot say the same for the other brands in the Ebay store - they may be foam insulated. WHY DO I KNOW THIS? Because I love this mug and coffee (Americano anyone?) and I’ve done the research! I originally contacted Starbucks head office when I lost my original mug to find out if they have some hanging around they can sell me. Then, I tracked down the manufacturer - IgniteUSA see http://www.igniteusa.com/ I then came across Susan Schiller from Ebay who happens to work for Ignite USA and sells overstock thru Coffee Mug Outlet. My orders came from IgniteUSA office address so I know they are legit.
Hey Randall and Caroline,
Glad you found the site and glad its been helpful. This mug has been one of the best purchases I have ever made and I have also gotten them from the email link above, as well as from target back in the day when they were vacuum sealed.
Thanks for stopping by, and really, I am going to post about that new contigo product soon (that I like more than my extreme mug). I just need more sleep right now (or more coffee).
Chris<><
Okay, just bought one of those HOT MUGS from the “Schiller Store” on eBay. I’ll be making a return to Target a bit later today.
And soon… I’m sure the yelling from my better half will ensue. On the bright side, we’re getting a tax refund! :p
–Randall
For those of you who may have lost the lid or would like a replacement, Susan was kind enough to list some lids on Ebay.
BUMMER! She doesn’t have any more Extreme mugs in stock!!!!
Sorry Mike. She had 38 Silver Starbucks Extreme for sale just a couple of weeks ago, it looks like listing ended early. Maybe she will re-list it again soon unless she sold the whole lot to someone.
Got this response from Susan when asking about the Extreme mugs:
“We have a plan in motion now, check back within the next couple of months! “
Yes, she said they did so well that they are planning to add more extreme mugs but are waiting for them to come in before they list. They wont have the Starbucks name on it, which will probably make them less expensive, but will have the same vaccuum insulation. I’m hoping she will add their newest mug called Autoseal, see http://www.igniteusa.com/autoseal.html It doesnt have the handy carabiner but looks cool!
Oh yeah… saw that autoseal mug at Target, I think.
Hey Chris… what about that new Contigo product you were teasin’ about last week? C’mon, man… GIVE!
–Randall
5 bucks shipped for a new lid, that’s pretty sweet. I ordered one, the gasket between the lid & the mug is baggy on mine.
Thanks for the update.
Hey, got my extreme mug in the mail today… It’s COOL!!!!
Thanks, Susan!!!

Hello all. I have learned quite a bit about this model of mug from this forum. Sadly, I was only looking because I lost my Starbucks version last night on a plane flight.
I literally yelled out in pain and anguish this morning when I went to retrieve it to pour my coffee into it and it simply wasn’t there.
I have contacted Susan of the ebay store about getting another vacuum sealed model, but as far as I can tell everything that’s for sale is the foam-sealed variety.
Any tips on where to find a vacuum model right now(for less that $50 on ebay of course)? Right now I’m trying to dig up a picture of me with the mug so I can apply for an autoseal through the last post, but that’s kind of a longshot.
Thanks in advance!
Update to previous post: I have managed to locate a tumbler version of the cup on ebay from a seller called shopgirl1. an example is
http://cgi.ebay.com/Extreme-Stainless-Tumbler-Cypress-Blue-Starbucks-Bonus_W0QQitemZ220129425390QQihZ012QQcategoryZ10795QQcmdZViewItem
I searched for starbucks extreme, and she has them in a few colors, specifying that they are “vacuum sealed”. Crossing my fingers. Thanks for all the info.
Hi, I’m in Vancouver Canada and would love to know if the Original Extreme mug with carabiner handle is available in Canada. I’m not keen on paying the shipping and duty from the US but really miss my old starbucks mug I lost July 1 2007. I don’t need amazing heat retention but the design is essential for clipping it on my belt when my hands are full at work. thank! Patrick
Ha! I thought I was the crazy one, but there are others like me! I love my Starbucks mugs and confess that I have paid outrageous prices on e-bay to supplement my collection and to give them as gifts. And yes, I was sorely disappointed with the one I found at Target. And now I know where to get more! Thankyouthankyouthankyou (and to Google that brought be here…)
Hello to all you Extreme lovers! I wanted to let you know that I have put more VACUUM insulated mugs on my eBay site, http://stores.ebay.com/Coffee-Mug-Outlet. I know I’ve spoken with quite a few of you and heard the disappointment when we ran out! Thank you for your loyalty to our product. Also, thanks to you who directed me to this great website. Your comments are much appreciated!
You are very welcome Susan - yup! I am taking all the credit - see #39 folks. Do I see a free mug in my future? LOL!
Folks, I see the converstaion around the proper extreme travel mug originally available from Starbucks. I loved the mug so much that when I lost mine and could not get a replacement (except foam filled rubish) so I became an importer of the mug for Europe. So if this side of the pond you can get you extreme travel mug from http://WWW.dbenterprise.ie - also on ebay. regards Dave
I lost my starbuck’s extreme tumbler a couple of years ago, I checked e-bay and was like no way! I gave up hope, and every tumbler I tried was a sorry, sorry, pathetic comparison. Just last week I was in target, cast my eyes over to their coffee tumbler section and the distinctive outline and it was as if I ran into a long lost friend. It was actually a strange feeling that I got “happy” about an darn coffee mug, but I was and I find solace in the fact that there are others out there have have an extreme passion for this extreme mug!
Waaaaaahhhhhhh! Costco (at least the one on Grandview near Boundary in Vancouver Canada) now has the mug in a 2-pack with a carabiner handled one and a handle-less one for $21.39 per set! I bought six sets. They come in red, platinum, gold, and blue. I was all prepared to drive to Washington state to buy a couple for a much higher cost. I think it’s as well insulated as the best ones. At least I can clip it on my belt and back pack. I’m so happy I could race to a drive-thru coffee shop and get them all filled up at once. I hope this makes someone as happy as it’s made me. If this has already been reported - sorry, I was too excited to read all the posts. Cheers, Patrick
Hey guys, Is there a mug that does not leak ? I have had different mugs, even the newest ones EXtreme Mug from Costco ! They all leak. I can’t seem to find a mug that doesn’t leak when I laid it down in my lunch bag. Could Anyone give me an idea what and how to get Non-leak , non-spill one ??
I originally had emailed Contigo Customer Service a few months ago and was told that Costco would be stocking them in the fall. I was so happy to see them at Costco last week. They have copper, red, silver/platinum in the 2-pack. Some Target stores even have the vacuum version now. There was none a few months ago in all the Targets that I checked.
TxD, mine do not leak at all. Make sure when you close the lid, push the white ring all the way down. Costco has the best price for these. They make great Christmas gifts.
How many times you scalded your mouth with that hot coffee? I love to drink my coffee fresh, right after it was brewed. But, how can you drink freshly brewed coffee from a travel mug (insulated mug) which keeps coffee hot for several hours??? Either you have to wait for couple of hours while it’s cooling down or you need another cup (regular one) to pour a small amount of your hot coffee into it and let it cool down.
I have a solution for that problem. I invented a travel mug which dosing hot beverage by small portions within same mug. The small portion cools fast, so you can drink your hot coffee/tea almost immediately after it was brewed while rest of the beverage kept hot for several hours. The mug is spill-proof. The design is very simple - it would be easy to wash and maintain. I am in a process of patenting my innovation and looking for a manufacturer who would be interested in purchasing the license.
Now, travel mug fans and coffee-lovers I need your feed back: would you by the travel mug I just described?? If Not - why? If Yes - why? I would really appreciate your feedback! Any questions - please ask!
Thank you in advance. RiJe
I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. I am in the army and one of our officers has a Starbucks extreme he sourced from Canada. I was impressed and sought one for myself. Now Starbucks here in Australia have them on their website but the local Starbucks know nothing of them (btw I don’t drink their rubbish coffee) Anyway, via this web forum I was able to buy 5 from Susan’s eBay store. They were for me and my army coffee fiends but the wife was impressed enough so one is hers now
Let me tell you, there is nothing better than a hot brew at 2am when on a radio piquet or in a foxhole and we aren’t allowed to boil up water after dark (light discipline) So many thanks to this forum for pointing me in the right direction.
It is true. Costco in Canada has the 2 pack for $25 and this mug is the BEST one I’ve had so far. A lady on the bus today asked me if it was leaf-proof (yes) and where could she get one! I feel like i just found a club among friends with y’all appreciating this mug like i do. And now i feel i should buy another as backup in case, like many of you, i lose/break mine and cannot find another!!
Are these dishwasher safe (top rack)? Or, must they be handwashed?
