Christmas from Another Perspective

It seems that Andrew Peterson keeps crossing my path in everyway but physically. I tried to go to 2 shows this fall and ended up missing them both. His Christmas album has been living in my CD player lately and I just listened to a podcast off Grassroots music that featured 3 of his songs live and a great interview with him. [If you send them an email listing those 3 songs, you get registered to win a signed poster, but I already have a few things signed by him. I'd rather see him in concert again.]

It’s been a crazy few weeks, preparing for Christmas. I have been wanting to share a few thoughts, specifically from the Andrew Peterson Christmas album. It is by far one of the best Christmas stories I have ever heard. It is from a perspective that we often miss at Christmas time. It is not just about the birth of Christ, it is about a 2000 year love story that ends in the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross for us. That is what Christmas is all about, and that is what this album is all about.

So Long Moses is the 3rd track on this album and it just keeps playing over and over in my head.

“From you, O Bethlehem Small among Judah A ruler will come Ancient and strong.”

The song steps us through some of the history of Israel right up to the time of Isaiah. When will we have a King, what will it be like when he comes? I am in the process of writing the script for our Christmas Eve service. This is the thought that keeps coming to mind. Christmas is about our King coming to earth. It is about love. It is about His death on the Cross. And someday he is coming again. Andrews post in his journal, a poem I read off Jonny Baker’s blog, the podcast from Grassroots, and this album repeating itself over and over again. All I can think of is how great this love story is and how much I can’t wait to see the end.

As the insanity of the “Christmas Season” overtakes you, remember that this whole thing is about the Love of God for us. That love that was so great he spent 2000+ years preparing His people for this day that we celebrate with presents, decorations, busyness, and arguments about whether we should have church services or not. This is God’s love story for us, not our traditions (church or otherwise).

Thank you Jesus, for loving us. Despite our self involvement and busyness, thank you for coming to earth as a small child.

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.
